HTTP Status Codes

A searchable list of HTTP status codes with a short, plain explanation of each.

1xx · Informational

  • 100ContinueThe server got the request headers; go ahead and send the body.
  • 101Switching ProtocolsThe server agrees to switch protocols, for example to WebSocket.
  • 103Early HintsEarly hints so the browser can start loading resources before the full response arrives.

2xx · Success

  • 200OKSuccess. The answer is in the response body.
  • 201CreatedSuccess, and something new was created (usually from a POST).
  • 202AcceptedAccepted, but it will be processed later.
  • 204No ContentSuccess, with nothing to send back.
  • 206Partial ContentOnly part of the content was sent, as asked by the Range header.

3xx · Redirection

  • 301Moved PermanentlyMoved for good. Search engines update their links.
  • 302FoundMoved for now.
  • 303See OtherSee another address with GET, usually after a form submit.
  • 304Not ModifiedNot changed; use the copy you already have.
  • 307Temporary RedirectMoved for now, and the method (POST stays POST) must not change.
  • 308Permanent RedirectMoved for good, and the method must not change.

4xx · Client error

  • 400Bad RequestThe request is malformed and the server can't make sense of it.
  • 401UnauthorizedYou need to sign in, or the credentials aren't valid.
  • 402Payment RequiredReserved for payments; rarely used.
  • 403ForbiddenThe server understood, but won't allow it.
  • 404Not FoundNothing found at this address.
  • 405Method Not AllowedThis method (for example DELETE) isn't allowed here.
  • 406Not AcceptableThe server can't send the format asked for in Accept.
  • 408Request TimeoutThe server waited too long for the request to finish.
  • 409ConflictConflicts with the current state, for example the data was changed by someone else.
  • 410GoneDeleted for good and not coming back.
  • 411Length RequiredA Content-Length header is required.
  • 412Precondition FailedA condition in the If-* headers wasn't met.
  • 413Content Too LargeThe request body is too large.
  • 414URI Too LongThe address is too long.
  • 415Unsupported Media TypeThe content format isn't supported (check Content-Type).
  • 416Range Not SatisfiableThe range in the Range header is outside the content.
  • 418I'm a teapotAn April Fools' joke from RFC 2324: I'm a teapot, not a coffee maker.
  • 422Unprocessable ContentWell-formed, but the content didn't pass validation.
  • 425Too EarlyThe server won't process a request that might be replayed.
  • 426Upgrade RequiredThe client must switch to another protocol first.
  • 428Precondition RequiredThe server requires a conditional request (If-Match).
  • 429Too Many RequestsToo many requests in a short time. Try again later.
  • 431Request Header Fields Too LargeThe request headers are too large.
  • 451Unavailable For Legal ReasonsCan't be shown for legal reasons.

5xx · Server error

  • 500Internal Server ErrorSomething broke on the server.
  • 501Not ImplementedThe server doesn't support the requested feature yet.
  • 502Bad GatewayA proxy got a broken answer from the server behind it.
  • 503Service UnavailableThe server can't serve right now, usually overloaded or under maintenance.
  • 504Gateway TimeoutA proxy waited too long for the server behind it.
  • 505HTTP Version Not SupportedThat HTTP version isn't supported.
  • 507Insufficient StorageThe server's storage is full.
  • 508Loop DetectedThe server hit an endless loop while processing.
  • 511Network Authentication RequiredYou need to sign in to the network first, like café or hotel Wi-Fi.
